About

Ronald MacDonald OBE is a photographer living in Portree on the Isle of Skye who has been producing and selling landscape photographs of the rugged Skye landscape since the early 1980’s. Although as a Skye man his primary love is the landscapes of the Hebrides of Scotland, and the Isle of Skye in particular, Ronald has also taken landscape photographs in other scenic locations including the Western Isles of Scotland, Australia, Chile, Mauritius, New Zealand, Peru and the USA.

Although his landscape work is primarily in colour, Ronald also has a keen interest in black and white photography and pushing the limits of his landscape work through his abstract photographs. Currently Ronald is transitioning away from the 3:2 rectangular image, which he has predominantly used throughout his career, to the square format which he now finds more pleasing from a compositional perspective.

From 2010 to 2023 Ronald and his wife Catriona ran their Skye Gallery, An t-Eilean Gallery in Portree, which was dedicated to Ronald’s landscape photographs. Although the gallery was very succesful as an outlet for Ronald’s work it left him with very little time to pursue his passion for being out in the field taking photographs. Given this we decided to move An t-Eilean Gallery online to this website.

However, Ronald still prints, mounts, and frames all his work in his Portree workshop using archival quality materials on a range of media, including the highest quality photo rag paper, polycotton canvas, aluminium, and acrylic. If you don’t see exactly what you are looking for in our online gallery please contact us through the web site and we will try to help. For those passing through Skye we can still supply framed products and large canvases mounted on stretcher bars. We hope you enjoy Ronald's photographs on the galleries on our web page and look forward to seeing you when you are in Scotland and on the wonderful Isle of Skye.
